Near Italy's Florence, the family of Aldo Marsili runs a wonderful factory, with a finely honed craft of manufacturing awe-inspiring chess sets for over 30 years.
Aldo Marsili established the chess factory Italfama in 1976. Like many successful businesses, Italfama was started as a hobby. Aldo enjoyed playing chess as a young man and he also enjoyed working with his hands. He realized the business potential of his hobby when his first handmade chess set was quickly purchased by one of his friends and his second immediately suffered the same fate.
Aldo has worked very hard with his brother Paolo for 33 years, and during that time the chess collection has grown, including various lines: classical and artistic chess pieces of different designs and materials, faithful reproductions of historical and mythological battles, memorable characters. The pieces are played on inlaid wooden chess boards made of the most beautiful woods, rosewood, maple, mahogany, walnut.
Artist and engraver Aldo Marsili oversees the entire production process for the chess pieces, which uses classical method of wax casting, in the style of Benvenuto Cellini and all the other famous sculptors of the 15th and 16th century. Each piece is fashioned by hand, with gold finish or paint, sculptured or hand-carved.
In the third millennium, Italfama is considered one of the most prestigious and appreciated manufacturers of chess pieces and chess boards in the world. In the last two years two of Aldo's sons, Marco and Tommaso, have joined the factory, and, thanks to their care and innovative ideas new lines have been added with worldwide appreciation and success.

Exactly what I expected for the money and description
When I read the description of how this Chess set was first designed and crafted by an Italian family business in Tuscany I was impressed. And being that its chess base measurements fit my smaller than traditional size hand made chess board, I ordered it. Confirmation of my order, and delivery, was quick, and the set came in an attractive foam-lined burgundy cardboard box, with individual spaces for each piece. I can recommend keeping the box for storage. The set now has pride of place on our living room coffee table. Thanks again Chess House!
age, but we now have the set on display, in pride of place on our living room coffee table. And Smores our cat has not tried to takeeces to hide them!
This is a beautiful set of chess pieces. It is hand made in Italy, and will have small 'imperfections' due to the handcrafting, which gives each set an identity of its own. The overall appearance is elegant.
The pieces also are very study and are much heavier than you might expect. The substantive weight makes each chess move you make very satisfying -- you won't want to play with cheap plastic pieces ever again.
And they come with a secret bonus: this set works 'out-of-the-box' with my DGT Pegasus board. That's right, you can use this set to replace the original pieces of the Pegasus, with no modifications required. This set is also a handsome pairing with the Pegasus board.
Chesshouse service was prompt, as usual. Excellent experience.
I am already attached to these unique and artistic pieces that seem to come with “tradition” already built-in. Very well made and already a family heirloom. Delivery was swift and without any issue. Obviously a very well company and factory.
Christmas gift for husband. Beautiful and well made. Packed safely.
This chess set did not disappoint. It is a gift so I am not an expert on chess sets but they are beautiful to look at and feel weighted in the hand so not easily knocked over. A kind of modern take on the classical set. The storage box is as described with a foam cutout reat for each chess piece.
Does the Florentine set come in a larger size??
Patrick, so sorry but we don't carry it in a larger size.
